The Rise of AI Slop and the Return of Human-Led Content

Table of contents

AI has made content abundant

Artificial intelligence has changed the economics of content production. Articles, social media posts and email campaigns can now be drafted in minutes, giving smaller teams capabilities that once required far more time and budget.

That efficiency is useful, but it has also created a flood of polished content with very little underneath. The same hooks, frameworks, and conclusions appear repeatedly, often without fresh evidence or a recognizable point of view.

This is the problem often described as “AI slop”: low-effort content produced at scale without distinctive perspective, meaningful experience, or clear value. The issue is not simply that AI is involved; it is that the work has little human judgement behind it.

Why generic content disappears

When businesses use similar tools and prompts, their output naturally begins to converge. AI is effective at producing what is statistically familiar, but familiarity is not the same as relevance. Technically correct content can still be forgettable.

This matters commercially. Content is often the first evidence a buyer sees of how a company thinks. If every article repeats what is already available, the brand provides information but no reason to be chosen. Google emphasizes helpful, people-first content and warns against large volumes of unoriginal pages with little added value. LinkedIn has also said that generic AI content may receive less distribution when it lacks perspective or substance.

Human-led content creates onfidence

The strongest response is not to reject AI. It is to make human expertise the source of the content and let technology support the process.

Human-led content begins with something a model cannot manufacture on its own: experience. A generic article can explain a framework. An experienced practitioner can explain when it failed, which assumption was wrong and what changed. That difference reveals judgement, which is what buyers evaluate when considering a professional partner.

For B2B brands, readers are rarely looking for information alone. They want confidence that the business understands the problem, recognizes the risks and can guide a sound decision. Content builds that confidence by showing how experts interpret situations and apply what they know.

Use AI to strengthen the work, not replace the hinking

AI still has an important role. It can organize research, test structures, refine language and accelerate editing, giving experts more time to focus on the ideas that deserve attention.

The sequence matters. Begin with a customer insight, a lesson from delivery, a disagreement with accepted practice or a decision the team can explain. Once the substance is clear, AI can help shape it into an accessible piece. Starting with the tool and searching for a point of view afterwards usually produces fluent content with little to say.

A practical standard for better content

Before publishing, ask whether the piece contains an observation your brand can genuinely own. Does it help the reader make a better decision? Is there evidence of experience rather than a summary of common advice? Would it still sound recognzsably yours if the logo were removed?

As generated content becomes more common, volume will matter less than distinction. Brands will stand out by combining the efficiency of AI with original expertise, disciplined editing and a voice the market can recognise. AI can accelerate production. Human judgement gives the work direction, relevance and credibility.

Your competitive advantage is not AI. It is the expertise behind your brand.
